UK work permits (general category) and permanent residence

As a UK work permit holder, you are eligible for permanent residence if you have lived and worked in the UK for at least five years. Once you have met the five-year requirement, you may be eligible for indefinite leave to stay in the UK, which can then be followed by British Naturalisation as a British citizen.

Intra-company transfers and permanent residence

As a holder of a British work permit in the ICT category, you can benefit from permanent residence if you have lived and worked in the United Kingdom for at least five years and obtained a level 2 intra-company transfer visa under the rules in effect before April 6. 2010 or had prior leave as an eligible work permit holder. Once you have met the five-year requirement, you may be eligible for indefinite leave to stay in the UK (ILR), which can then be followed by British Naturalisation as a British citizen.

Job changes

If you want to change employers, you must obtain a new sponsorship certificate from an authorised employer. You will also need to reevaluate from the current points test and the position will meet the advertising requirements of the resident labour market test (if applicable).

Have a sponsorship certificate issued by your sponsoring employer; and
Pass the point assessment, details of which can be found on the category-specific work permit pages below.
